Bolivia’s Largest City: City Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, the capital city of Santa Cruz department of Bolivia, is the largest city in terms of population in the country. It is also considered economically most prosperous country. Its climate is very tropical, being located at an altitude of 416 meters, while other places in the country are located higher in the Andes.

History
Santa Cruz de la Sierra means ‘Holy Cross of the Hills’, given this name by Ñuflo de Chávez on its foundation date on 26th February 1561. It was in honor of his native city in Spain, Extremedura. Several tribes were incorporated, and Catholic faith was applied through Jesuits. Because of the Jesuits influence, the multi-ethnic population reduced in ethnicity.

Presently, Santa Cruz is the most populous and wealthiest city of Bolivia. It contributes 30% of the national GDP.

Popular Places and Monuments
The city’s layout is a concentric ring model. It makes for a structure study of a city, with very high population. Shared taxis are usually faster than micros. The fares are almost same. Other than that, separate taxis or cabs are available, but one has to pay higher. With proper booking, car rentals may also be available.
