José Ruiz de Arellano inaugurated the city, under the protection of a chapel built 1728, while the city itself was inaugurated on 23rd of October 1730. It has, since then, served as a city of national historical interest by the Argentinean Government. The country takes pride in Don Segundo Sombra, one of the most important Argentinean novels, written around the city on the main title character being a gaucho.

Popular Places and Monuments
The place still has an aura that dates two centuries back. There are beautiful period houses, and dispersed between them are authentic pulperias and almacénes. There are workshops of artisans, and craftsmen. They are open, and one can visit these workshops, for pure delight of watching the craftsmen, locksmith, etc, at their beautiful and detailed work. Traditional gauchos take pride in doing what their fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers, and so on, did with pride, and therefore, it was named a city of historical interest by presidential decree.

The Gaucho Museum is another place which makes it a city of historical interest. It holds the information on Gaucho history and the country’s history scaled according to date. It is one of the most important museums in the country. Museum is named Museo Gauchesco Ricardo Guiraldes, on the name of the author of the famous book, Don Segundo Sombra, Ricardo Guiraldes, once again highlighting the pride Gauchos take in the novel, and their depiction of themselves, and their culture through the novel.

Getting Around
