San Pedro Sula – Where Honduran History and Future Unite

San Pedro Sula, the second largest Honduran city, is a modern city located along River Chamelecon and contains substantial natural and man-made attractions of historical importance enough to keep tourists interested for a long while.
   
History
The city was established in 1536 near Choloma town and was essentially used for cattle-raising and agriculture. It was named San Pedro Sula in 18th century after its founder San Pedro and neighbouring gold mines called Minas de Sula. After Spanish occupation, the city was raided was French, Dutch and English pirates because of which it was moved near River Chamelecon. The settlement began to grow only in the 19th century. It was declared as a city in 1902 because of its industrial importance in connecting the region’s banana plantations with the ports.

Popular Places and Attractions
The Museums of Anthropology and Natural History effectively displays Honduran culture and history though various sculptures, paintings and ceramics. Relics of the Mayan era have also been showcased in the museum. Visitors also get a chance to see the city’s exotic flora and wildlife.

Parque Nacional Cusuco is located just around the city. This subtropical forest contains the well-preserved ruins of the Mayans at a village called Copan. Its intricate hieroglyphs, stone sculptures, cobbled streets and adobe buildings give it a distinctly Mayan flavour. Copan’s attractions include the Acropolis, the Great Plaza, the surrounding hot springs of village Santa Rita de Copain and serene colonial churches.

Some other popular city attractions include the Astronomy Museum, the churches of Catedral Metropolitana and San Vincente de Paul, the Municipal Palace, the Central Park and its Cathedral, the Zona de Armenta which is a recreational park along the river and trails along the Merendon Mountain range for garnering spectacular views of Sula valley.

Getting Around
Buses, taxis, minivans called “Rapiditos”, colectivos (shared taxis) and rented cars are the various options available for getting around the city, a good guide to smooth travel is to keep some small notes handy to pay for your travel.

Places for Entertainment
The city has a number of nightclubs, bars, karaoke venues, dance clubs and clubs. A major part of the nightlife goes around in Zone Viva. Restaurants and cafes can be tried for experiencing the flavour of Honduran coffee and local delicacies. The Guamilitio market is a popular shopping venue for purchasing Honduran handicrafts, drinks and hammocks.

The art galleries, garments and souvenirs of Multiplaza and Casa de Sol can also be tried out. The 100-women tortilla contest at the city’s huge open-air market is another nice place for entertainment. The annual June fair is one of the most celebrated Honduran festivals. Avenida Circunvalacion, the most famous night-time zone of the city, hosts this fair called Feria Juniana.
