City Selibe Phikwe in Botswana – Nickel Mining Town of Botswana

A nickel mining town located in central district of the country, City Selibe Phikwe in Botswana has a population of over 52,000. Nickel mining commenced during 1973. It has the main activity centre that includes a mine as well as a smelter.

Brief History
At the inset there were a couple of tiny habitations called Selebi and Phikwe. When a large deposit of copper and nickel was discovered in the area in 1960s, a mining town was built up there in the woodland and the combined name of Selibe Phikwe was adopted. Today, the mining activities offer the main source of livelihood for the inhabitants of the area. Coal fired power station that was built along the line was the only power station in Botswana till late 1980s.

Getting Around
It may not be possible planning a completely hassle free guide to getting around Selebi Phikwe. Locomotives used in the area continue to be steam powered and were brought from the National Railways of Zimbabwe and the South African Railways.

Mining operations were likely to stop by 2013 originally but will now continue up to 2020 at the minimum. Mines have the longest cable belt system in the Southern hemisphere. Air connectivity is available to the town that is also well connected by roads with other important places of Botswana.

Popular Places and Monuments
Through the main road beyond Palapaye the visitors will come across mopane woodland before reaching the turn off to the mining town of Selebi Phikwe. The town is the third largest urban centre in Botswana. It is also a convenient half way stop over between Johannesburg via Ellisars and approach to most of the northern tourist attractions in Botswana.

Places of Interest
A principal shopping mall in addition to a small airport that only operates in daylight is the places of interest in the area. A technical college for artisan level training is also available. No such monuments or heritage site exists in the town. However there are libraries, parks, shopping malls, golf course, sports and hobby clubs, service organizations and the airport has also been specially upgraded.
