Slane –Heritage in the Rural Landscape

Slane, a small village in the Meath county of Ireland, boasts of a rich history and its countryside certainly captivates all its visitors.

History:
Located along the river Boyne, Slane is in existence from over 5,000 years. It is most noted in history for the famous battle of boyne fought in 1690 that marked the establishment of the rule of William of Orange in Ireland.

Popular Places:
The steep hill to the north of the village is filled with heritage. It is often quoted that paschal fire was lit by St. Patrick here to protest against the then Pagan king of Tara. The hill of Slane over the years went on to be the religious center and the remains of friary church and tower located here retraces visitors to historical times. The sight from the top of the tower is truly magnificent.

Many twelfth century remains from ‘The Flemings’ regime also attracts visitors. One of the most visited spots in Slane is the castle along the river. It was reconstructed in the 18th century and remains home to the Lords of Slane - The Conynghams. Its huge theater which hosts annual music concerts draws many visitors. Millifont abbey besides being a magnificent architecture also marks the beginning of cistercian monastery in Ireland and it also served as headquarter to William of Orange in the battle of boyne. The four identical Georgian houses in the centre of the village are among top attractions of the place. The scenic sights of the countryside leave lasting memories on visitors.  

Many other historical sites are in close proximity to Slane viz., the ruins of Fennor castle, St. Erc’s hermitage, The Brú na Bóinne complex and the famous site of battle of boyne is just 10 kilometers from Slane.

Getting Around:
Slane is easily accessible from Dublin and buses aid in getting around the place, a good guide is to get a map of Slane to aid you getting around. A coach or taxi can also be hired while walk can be the preferred option to explore the beauty of this small village.

Places of Entertainment:
Popular celebrities perform at the annual rock concerts held at the Slane castle attracting many visitors. Horse riding, fishing, stroll along the river side, cycling in the countryside besides Golf in the rural landscape can be long cherished. Bars and clubs spur an active night life.
