About TBILISI

City Tbilisi- Enjoy the Caucasian Warmth at Its Best

The capital city of Georgia, Tbilisi located along the banks of Kura River is the largest Georgian city. Warm and upbeat, the city is famous for its architectural marvels, impressive wine list, hot sulphur springs, adventure leisure activities and more. This Caucasian City showcases the old world charm and the contemporary elegance all at once.

History
The city of Tbilisi was set up by the Georgian King of the erstwhile Iberia, Vakhtang Gorgasali in the 5th century and was made the capital of the region around the 6th century. Its strategic location along the silk route made it an important industrial hub and ironically this resulted in rivalries among various empires. Tbilisi still preserves its medieval charm in the narrow cobbled streets of Narikala district and in its many castles and forts.

Popular places:
There are many interesting places to visit in this city. Monasteries and historical buildings including Metekni Palace and Sameba Church are some of the important landmarks of this city. The 4th century Narikala Fortress perched atop a mountain is yet another hot tourist attraction. There is an ancient church of St. Nicholos within the well preserved and almost unbroken walls of this fortress.

A climb up the fortress would ensure the panoramic views of the old town and the winding Mtkvari River. The Freedom square, one of the biggest in Georgia is another must see. The Town hall, which flaunts a diverse architectural style, has Asian and other cultural influences. There are cafes, clubs and restaurants where you can mingle with the fun loving locals of Tbilisi.

Getting around:
Public buses, metro trains, mini buses and taxis are the common means of travelling in this city. The best guide to hassle free travel is to have some money handy in small notes to pay for your journey

Places of entertainment
Tbilisi has many interesting museums and art galleries where you can browse through the Georgian art. Wine tours and nature parks are also equally popular among tourists. There are economical shopping options and a lively night life to enliven your holidays in this vibrant city. The proximity of the Caucasian Mountains makes Tbilisi a hot spot for adventure tourism and winter sports. The name if the city literally means warm, in reference to the hot sulphur springs and spas in this city. Considered to have medicinal properties, taking a bath in these springs is a must do while you are in Tbilisi.
