Butumi – The Georgian Town of Beaches and Beauty
Butumi, the seaside Georgian city is a major sea resort along the Black Sea and is popular for its exotic flora. The port, the beaches, the dolphins and the floral fragrance make this city a popular tourist destination.
History
Butumi is situated within Bathys in Colchis, an ancient colony of the Greeks. Till the 10th century, it had been under the rule of Romans, Arabs and Georgians. T was taken over by the Russians under the Ottomans between the early 16th to the late 19th century. It developed into an important port during this time. After successive occupations by the Ottomans and British during World War I, Butumi became a part of the Republic of Georgia in the year 1920. In 1921, it was made to join the Soviet Union. After the collapse of USSR in the 1990’s, Butumi and its corresponding region, Adjara, decided to remain with the Republic of Georgia.

The air of Butumi is fragranced through its numerous palm trees, magnolias, orange trees, cypresses, thuyas, box trees and lemon. The city border is surrounded by its port for over 2 Kms and is one of the most popular places amongst visitors as well as locals. The Butumi Quay or the Seaside Park as named by the residents of Butumi, is the best place for visualizing the harbour.
The city’s old part is over 150 years old and is known for its architectural subtleties as seen in its building decorations in the form of chimeras, atlantes, mermaids and similar mythical creatures. The architectural form is a combination of Asian and European styles.
Other places of attraction include its churches, mosques, the botanical gardens, circus, aquarium, the State Museum of Adjara, the Gonio Fortress, and the Butumu Stalin Museum for commemorating Joseph Stalin’s stay in Butumi and the century old Archaeological Museum with its unique collection of Bronze Age items and Greek as well as Roman era items.
