About MADABA

Madaba – Treasure of Mosaics from Bygone Era

Madaba is the fifth most populous town of Jordan and the capital city of Madaba Governorate. Known for its historic treasure, the town has a long history and thus, it attracts a good crowd of tourists every month. It is located on the King’s Highway at a distance of 10 km from the city of Hesban.

History
Madaba and the region around are known since the Neolithic Age or for more than 4500 years. The town also has mention in the Bible as a town on the Moabite city border. At the time of Exodus, the place was divided into 12 Israeli tribes. Ammonites ruled the region around 165 BC and then, it was taken over by Hyrcanus I of Israel. Romans were next to rule the place in the start of the 2nd century AD. Christian Byzantine period in the town, from 2nd to 7th century, witnessed its prosperity and building up of historic sites. Islamic Umayyad Caliphate rule followed after the decline of other dynasties in the region.

It was during the 8th century that the town was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake and remained in the deteriorated state for next 1100 years. It was in the 19th century that the town was reinvented by Christian communities that hailed from Kerak.

Popular Places
St. George Church, an example of Greek orthodox structures, is one of the highlights of Madaba, known for its mosaic map, the Madaba Map. The Holy Land section in the premises displays Jerusalem, the Dead Sea and Sinai Peninsula that form the wonderful attractions of this spot. One can also watch other mosaics at the Church of the Virgin and the Church of the Apostles. Byzantine Churches and remnants belonging to the Roman Period are the main highlights of the Madaba Museum, another great tourist destination in the town.

Archaeological Museum is another interesting site with archaeological values and a number of mosaics. The Burnt palace is known for some more mosaics, walkways and a luxurious look and feel. Martyrs Church is also worth paying a visit. An Iron Age Fortification Wall can also be of great interest for tourists from all age groups. 

Getting Around
Taxis can be hired to explore the city and one can also use the bus service for this purpose. Though, a good idea is to accompany a guide and get around the city on foot.

Places of Entertainment
Visit Mt. Nebo near the town to have a spectacular view of the town and the Dead Sea from its top. Amra, Kharaneh and Azraq are the desert castles located near the town and worth paying a visit. Hammamat Ma’in to the southwest of the town consists of thermal mineral water springs, known for their healing waters. Mosaic School of Madaba is the venue to see people learning the art to restore the mosaics. Madaba is well-known for its woven items in bright colours. You would love to purchase the woven rugs on a visit to the town.
