About NASSAU
Nassau – Adorned By Bahamas’ Best Natural Beauty
Nassau, the capital of the Commonwealth of Bahamas, serves a unique blend of colonial architecture, modern sophistications and natural splendour. It has also featured for several times in James Bond movies.
History
The British established the city in 1650 and called it Charles Town. It was renamed as Nassau in 1695 after England’s King William III. The city’s proximity to the trade route soon made it a famous pirates’ den. English pirates proclaimed Nassau as a “Privateers Republic” under the leadership of Edward Teach (Blackbeard). The pirates were finally expelled by the British forces in 1718. Today, Nassau contains more than 70% of Bahamas’ population.
