Beirut – A City that Never Sleeps

Beirut is the largest and the capital city of Lebanon that serves as the country's main and the largest seaport. Holding the seat of government, Beirut is the focal point of Lebanese economy and the region's cultural activities, nightlife and theatres.

History of Beirut:
There are different theories behind how Beirut got its current name. While some believe that the city derived its name from Aphrodite's daughter, others argue that Beirut is the contraction of "Bayt Ashtarout" or "the city of Astarte". Beirut remained the intellectual capital of the Arabs after Lebanon achieved its independence in 1943.

Popular Places and Attractions:
The National Museum of Beirut is Lebanon's principal museum of archaeology while The American University of Beirut archaeological museum is Middle East's third oldest museum. Other noticeable museums in Beirut are Robert Mouawad Private Museum, Sursock Museum, the Gibran Museum, etc.

There are a number of religious monuments in Beirut such as The Greek-Catholic Cathedral of Saint Elias, The Saint Louis Church of Capucins, The Evangelical Church, The Greek-Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George, etc. A few of these buildings are remnants of the French colonization and display the unique style of Parisian architecture. The well preserved Al Omari Mosque of Beirut has been and is a must see.

Some other prominent sites of Beirut include Parliament Building, Roman Baths, Grand Serail, Corniche Road, Pigeon's Rock, the Hamra Street, Lady of Harissa, the Beit ed-Dine Palace, etc.
