History
Before being taken over by Sisal and the Progreso in the end of 19th century, Campeche was the principal port of Yucatán. It was the second largest and one of the most important cities of the peninsula.

The chapel tracing its origin to the XVI century was consecrated in 1833. The city square also flaunts colonial architecture and historical edifices, which add a quixotic charm to it. The city wall remains and the small forts called baluartes could be still seen.  The Xmuch Haltun Botanical Garden with many rare collection of Yucatan botanical species is another top spot to visit. There are various archeological zones including Xpuhil, Calakmul and  Balamku in Campeche, where you could take a peek at its past civilizations and Mayan legacy.

"Puerta de Tierra" (Land Gate), constructed way back  in 1732 is one of the most prominent landmarks of the City where exciting light and sound shows would be held at night.

Getting around:
Public transport buses and car rentals are the most common types of transportation in the city to help guide you for smooth travel pland a good tip is to keep some small notes and coins handy for the bus fare.

Places of Entertainment:
There are various UN heritage sites and Baroque style colonies and medieval buildings of the 16th century buildings  lining the city squares and streets. It has one of the largest concentration of Mayan ruins in the world, which imparts it a rich historical tag. There are exciting beaches like Playa Bonita, and Seybaplaya, not very far from the city where you can indulge in snorkeling and swimming among others.
