History
Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac, a French officer founded Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit in the year 1701. Families were attracted to buy land at this new settlement and by 1765; it became one of the largest cities of the region. In 1760, this port city was surrendered to the British who renamed it to Detroit. In 1796, the city was passed to the United States. In 1812, the British again captured the city which was recaptured by the US in 1813. The development began in the beginning of the 20th century and the city was given the status of the “Paris of the West”. In the middle of the century, the city was blessed with the automobile industry.
Popular Places
Well-known for its architecture, Detroit has several popular attractions like the Renaissance Center, the Guardian Building and the Wayne County Building. Art-Deco and the Roman Baroque architecture styles have been used to embellish such wonderful buildings. A number of historic neighbourhoods of the city are popular for specific reasons. While Greektown is known for its casino and restaurants, Woodbridge is known for its Victorian-style architecture.
Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and Detroit Institute of Arts are some of the popular museums in the city. Among many parks in the city, the Campus Martius Park and the Grand Circus Park are worth visiting.

To get around the city, one can use a number of mediums, like public bus service, light rail system, taxis, car rentals and bicycle rentals. You can purchase city’s maps that would act as

Being the birthplace of electro and techno music, Detroit has a number of venues to enjoy live music concerts. As many as 80 art galleries are located in the city. The city is also the home to three famous casinos. Shopping at Riverfront Shops, Eastern Market and many other places is also recommended for the tourists.
