Irkutsk City – Experience the Feeling of Being at a Resort in the Heart of Siberia

Irkutsk is one of the popular Siberian cities, located in the Irkutsk Oblast province of Russia. The city is one of the greatest representatives of Russian arts, cultures and various other significant aspects. With wooden houses and beautiful embankments, the city has emerged as a popular tourist destination in the country.

History:
Irkutsk was founded as a winter camp in the year 1652, with the aims like gold trading and collection of fur tax. In 1686, the place officially obtained the rights of being a city. Construction of roads, fort and trade routes were the important developments that made it a prominent city on the map of Russia. Apart from that, a number of artists and nobles have been the part of this city. The building up of the Trans-Siberian Railroad in the city in 1898 enhanced its importance further. Due to a vast improvement shown by the city, it became popular with the title of ‘the Paris of Siberia’. Over all these years, the city has undergone industrial development, but has not lost the significance as a wonderful tourist destination.

Popular Places:
The houses of Decembrist exiles form one of the important tourist places in the city. The wooden buildings in all parts of the city can be explored to make your trip memorable. A number of museums are located in the city, the most popular being the City History Museum, the Geology Museum, the Irkutsk Regional Museum and Sukachev Art Museum.

The city also accommodates a number of historical churches like Ascension Church, Our Lady of Kazan Church and Saviour Church. The Roman Catholic Churches and the Orthodox Churches make the city centre a wonderful place to visit. Lake Baikal offering delightful natural beauty is another site worth visiting.

Getting Around:
Buses and minibuses can be considered as the convenient modes of local transportation to move between different tourist locations. One can also have fun by exploring some parts of the city on foot. A good guide is to have some money handy to pay for your travel.

Places of Entertainment:
Having fun at the central park of the city in the winter is a great activity. Ice sculptures and ice slides in the park make the best attractions for the tourists visiting the city. Angara Embankment is a great place for the young people to gather. Some of the popular shopping items in the city markets are wood carvings and the winter boots called Kamusi. A number of restaurants and cafes are available for enjoying delicious foods and exotic drinks.
