Lima-One amongst the Choicest Tourist Destinations

A metropolis that booms with economic activity, Lima maintains to be a preferred tourist destination for its magnificent architecture, top class churches and museums and vibrant nightlife.  It’s striking neighbourhoods and rich culture makes it a popular tourist hub.

History
The history of Lima dates back to the sixteenth century when Lima was designated the Viceroyalty of Peru by the kingdom of Spain. With this, Lima roared as the centre of commerce, culture and economy. It lost its influence when it was struck by a massive earthquake in 1746. Later, in the 20th century, the city became a target of bombings and state sponsored violence.

Popular Places and Attractions
Oasis of rich history and culture, Lima has great architectural wonders in the form of mansions, museums, churches, universities etc. It is because of this that UNESCO has ranked architecture of Lima as a world heritage site.

Plaza Mayor and Plaza San Martin form the heart of the city and are marked with pedestrian crowds and vendors. Notable architectural buildings around this place are Spanish Baroque Cathedral, Government Palace, Town Hall, Museum of Religious Art and Architecture, etc. To have an overview of the archaeological richness of Lima, one must visit Museo de la Nacion. Museo Rafael Larco Herrera, housing the most impressive and the largest collection of ceramics, and Museo de Oro Del Peru are other important tourist destinations. 

The spectacular church of San Francisco, Pisco’s wildlife treasures and Nazca’s archaeological sites are other places that are a must see at Lima. 

Getting Around in Lima
When moving within the city, buses are the cheapest and taxis are the most convenient modes of transportation.

Places for Entertainment
At Lima, one can shop for the best traditional handicrafts that one would see all across Peru. Tony boutiques, supermarkets, artisan and antique shops, etc provide variety of handicrafts, antiques, jewellery, etc at the best prices. Miraflores is indeed a shopper’s paradise.

Lima is the largest city of Peru and thus witnesses the most varied international flavour in terms of nightlife. Whether you are a follower of jazz, rock or Latin music, you will find all types of live music melodious for your ears all throughout the night. Miraflores and Barranco offer the best and the wildest in nightlife with high octane discos, clubs, penas and bars.

Accommodation Options
Lima has great accommodation options that range from budget hotels to luxury hotels resorts, from cheap youth hostels, bed and breakfast, guesthouse and motels to discounted hotels. Accommodation arrangements are even better at Miraflores and San Isidro where much of the social scene takes place. Spanish and Quechua are official languages of Lima.

Currency
Currency exchange is not a problem in Lima with many stores, hotels and supermarkets accepting US dollars. However, only a few bureaux de change currencies other than US dollars in Lima. Nuevo Sol is the currency of Peru denoted by symbol S/.
