Medjugorje – A Small Pilgrim Spot

Land of Virgin Mary in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the town with diverse religious beliefs amid beautiful landscape makes Medjugorje an interesting site.

History:
Medjugorje means ‘between the hills’. Besides the devastating Bosnian War in the late 1990s, Medjugorje history marks the witness of Virgin Mary, also locally known as ‘Gospa’ in 1981.

Popular Places:
Apparition hills are the biggest attractions where Gospa (Virgin Mary) appeared to six ‘visionaries’ in 1981 and is believed to be appearing to them till date. The statue of Mary on the top of the hill and the vine gardens below are other big draws. Though Bosnia and Herzegovina has majority of Muslims, Medjugorje has a good catholic population. St. Jame’s church is believed to be very sacred and is teemed with people during daily rosary and mass. Cenacolo is a rehabilitation center for distressed men and the chapel there boasts of some fine art work by the men living there. The nearby cross mountain is a beautiful site and the path leading to the top renders adventurous pleasure. White cross on the mountain is one of the landmarks of Medjugorje.

Getting Around:
Medjugorje has excellent rail and bus connection from many parts of Europe as well from many cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Buses and trams facilitate getting around the city, while visitors can also walk down the place and enjoy the nature, if you choose to use the buses and trams a good guide is to have the right fare handy so small notes and coins are very useful.

Places of Entertainment:
Numerous shops at the square boast of unique souvenirs and the Moreno art glass is a must buy here. Many pizzerias, cafes, bakeries and restaurants not only offer good meal but also make the city a very lively place. Bars at the square spur an active night life.

Accommodation:
Many Inns in Medugorje are run by families and offer very courteous service and a taste of the country. Hotels for all budgets are also available, you can also stay in guesthouse, bed & breakfast, youth hostels, motels, and budget hotels.

Currency:
Convertible Mark is the currency of Medugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina while Euro is widely accepted and can also be changed at about 1:2 ratio, check the news and internet for the latest exchange rates.
