About MOSTAR

Mostar- Treasure of Herzegovina

Recouping from the disaster of the war in 1990s, Mostar emerged to be the important regional centre in southern Herzegovina. Its amazing landscape encompassing beautiful mountains, rivers, valleys amid historical constructions makes it a crucial tourist destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

History:
The name, ‘Mostar’ refers to the city’s old bridge and means ‘bridge keepers’. Its location on the banks of the river Neretva made it a strategic location. The city was widely affected by the war in 1990s destroying many of its prime monuments.

Popular Places:
Stari Most, the old bridge, built in the late 16th century is the landmark of Mostar. It was reconstructed in 2004 subsequent to massive destruction in the Bosnian war and is now a part of UNESCOs World Heritage Sites. The bridge spans 29 meters connecting both the banks of the river Neretva, is a high structure which comes to full glory in the illuminations. Kriva Cuprija, crooked bridge, on the river Radoblja is other attraction. Museum of Herzegovina depicts the history of the place. Very close to the museum is the 15 m high Sahat Kula, clock tower, from the 17th century. Karadoz-beg Mosque is the largest in Mostar and the attractive architecture is in Turkish style. Stroll on the banks of the beautiful Neretva River reveals many war hit buildings.

Getting Around:
Mostar is connected by air, train and bus from various European countries. Local buses can be used to explore the place, a guide to smooth travel on the buses is to have some small notes and coins handy to pay the fare, while visitors can go around the small town and its many pedestrian streets on foot.

Places of Entertainment:
Turkish style shopping streets on cold stone roads are very attractive and sell many local crafts viz., copper works, jewelry, rugs etc. Cafes, restaurants along the streets offer many Bosnian dishes. Prirodni Limunada drink is a must have here. Old town has many bars and clubs spurring a lively night life.

Accommodation:
Many Inns, budget hotels, bed & breakfast, youth hostels accommodation, guesthouse, motels and a luxurious hotel are available for accommodation.
