Padova – An Important Art City in Italy

Padova or Padua is better known as the economic capital of Veneto. It has tradition, art, culture, variety and elegance to offer to its tourists which is reflected in its historic structures, history and people.

History:
Padova, founded in the 4th century BC as a fisherman’s village, became one of the most flourishing towns of the Roman Empire and witnessed extraordinary economic and cultural achievements in the 13th and 14th century. It was passed on to Austria before finally being annexed by the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

Popular Places and Attractions:
The austere looking Scrovegni Chapel is undoubtedly the most historic structure in Padova. Built in early 13th century, this Romanesque-styled building is a star attraction of Padova with its interiors packed with the frescoes of historical importance. Another striking structure in Padova is the Palazzo della Rangione whose ceiling is the largest of its kind in Europe.

When it comes to churches, Basilica of St Anthony is the largest in Padova. The Duomo, Padova’s titular church, is another tourist attraction that was built in the 12th century. Another church that is a must-see in Padova is the Basilica of Santa Giustina, located on Prato della Valle, an elliptical shaped huge square and a very widely known landmark of the city. This square is studded with the statues of Padovian notables and is said to be the largest square in Italy.

Other places of interest are the Botanical Gardens of Padova, Piazza dei Signori, Bo Palace, St Justine Basilica, etc.

Getting Around:
One can get around Padova on foot or by a bicycle, car, tramway or bus, a good tip is to get a map of Padova to help guide you round the city.

Places for Entertainment:
Padova has an interesting mix of shopping centres, super markets, fresh food markets and stores. Auchan is one of the most popular shopping centres of Padova. The open air market in the Piazza delle Erbe is known to be the best and the cheapest shopping area of Padova. Another traditional market in Padova is held in Prato della Valle.

Nightlife in Padova includes everything, from theatre to pubs, from discotheques to clubs. Some of the popular pubs/bars at Padova are Bar Sole, Highlander Pub, Sir Francis Drake Pub, etc. Extra-Extra, Station, Dancing P.1 and East Side World are some of the discotheques/clubs that swarms with teens and young people all the night.

Padova is home to excellent wines and gifted with oil, vegetable, fruits and cheese of all types. Some of the city’s popular places to dine out are Ristorante Al Fagiano, Loreto, Dafra, Birillo, etc.
