History
Like most of the cities and regions of Mexico, San Cristobel De Las Casas city was also ruled by Mayas people for thousands of years. The city was named after Bartolomé de Las Casas, the Spanish priest and the first bishop in the state of Chiapas. The Spanish conqueror Diego de Mazariegos captured the city in 1528. Over all its history, the city was renamed a number of times. Zapatista movement started in 1994 continues till date to bring the city under the control of Zapatista Army of National Liberation.
