City Sucre- The Constitutional Capital of Bolivia
The constitutional capital of
Bolivia, also know the city of four names, Sucre is a listed UNESCO World Heritage site, category Cultural (iv). Its climate is warm and temperate throughout the year, which is provided by an elevation of 2750 meters.
History
Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo was the name of the city given by Pedro Anzures, on its foundation date in 1538, November 30th. Franciscans founded the Recoleta Monastery in 1601, and an archbishopric was founded in 1609. St Francis Xavier University of Chuquisaca was founded in the year 1624. Sucre still remains the seat of Roman Catholic, and it follows the pattern of colonial days, reflecting Andalusia culture which can be seen in the city’s architecture. In 1839, it was named Sucre after great revolutionary Antonio José de Sucre. It was also changed to capital of Bolivia around the same time. In 1991, it was named a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.
Popular Places and Monuments
The most important building of the nation is The House of Freedom or La Casa de la Libertad. Simon Bolivar, who wrote constitution, found the building. Built in the same year as that of republic formation, National Library or La Biblioteca Nacional is also one of the oldest buildings of the place. Metropolitan Cathedral or La Catedral Metropolitana has the first and the most important museum of the country, built between 1559 and 1712.
Archbishop's Palace (El Palacio Arzobispal) was one of the most important religious buildings of colonial times, along with being the most important historic place, built in 1609. Cemetery is the most beautiful place in the city. There are various Churches & Convents, Churches, and a Chapel in the city. Impression on a 70 degree wall of a cement quarry, on once a lake floor, Cal Orkco is a collection of dinosaur footprints.
Getting Around
It is a very small township, with regular buses, and taxis. You can use either the public transport buses, or the taxis. Mostly, there won’t be much problem, as most of the places worth visiting are located with a few blocks. It’s better if you have an aid of a
guide in this place of historical importance.
Places for Entertainment
Parque Bolivar is famous as city’s lover’s hangout place. It is surrounded by country’s Supreme Court and Sucre Train Station on either side. Also, it is a place for learning Spanish. One can learn the oldest versions of the modern developed language. Because of rich Spanish teaching facilities, visitors often stay longer than planned.
