The city of Taormina is known for its beautiful location on the east coast of Sicily in Italy. Located above the Ionian Sea like a terrace and hovering at the base of Mount Etna, the city is capable of drawing tourists in large number all over the year.

History
Like other neighbouring areas, Taormina was initially inhabited by the Siculi, even before the Greeks invaded the region. The Greeks visited the area in 832 BC and colonized various towns, including Taormina. After experiencing prosperity, the city was hugely damaged during the Servile War in Sicily during 134-132 BC. After being ruled by the Romans and the Greeks, the city fell into the hands of the Arabs in AD 902. The city was ruled by the Normans, the Angevines and the Aragonese, before it was besieged by the French in 1675. The Savoia Dynasty, the Austrians and the Spanish also ruled the city until the 19th century when it was freed from the foreign dominion.  

Popular Places
The most popular place of the city consists of ancient sites with ruins of old buildings and structures. The ruins of the ancient Greek Theatre, known as Teatro Greco, are the most interesting parts of the city to visit. The Torre dell'Orogio clock tower is another site in the city worth visiting. Some other popular places in the city include the fountain in piazza duomo, the San Domenico, the Arabian Necropolis and the Byzantine Madonna. A number of old churches can also be visited.

Getting Around
