History of Tartu:
The first settlement on the modern day Tartu dates back to as early as 5th century AD as per archaeological evidence. Tartu became a part of Russian empire in 1721 with the Treaty of Nystad. It had to be rebuilt after massive fire struck the city in the 18th century. It became the cultural center of Estonia in the latter half of the 19th century.

Founded in the early 19th century, Botanical Gardens today proudly displays more than 7000 different plant species, landscaped rock gardens and a magnificent glasshouse.
