Tarxien – Land of Prehistoric Temples

The small village of Tarxien, in the south east of Malta is home to megalithic architectural excellence and its carvings are certainly mesmerizing. The city attract worldwide travellers.

History:
Tarxien derives its name from the word ‘Tirix’ meaning a large stone. Its existence dates back to 2800 BC.

Popular Places:
Prehistoric temples are the landmarks of Tarxien. In the heart of the village, the Tarxien temple complex consisting of four megalithic temples render sight of complex yet marvelous construction. The unique central temple consists of six apses and is an illustrious example of Maltese architecture. The decorative carvings in all the temples are notable attractions viz., the relief of two bulls and a sow, spiral designs on altar, animals’ carvings on relief.  The biggest attraction is the sculpture of ‘fertility goddess’ also known as ‘fat lady’.

Annunciation feast is greatly celebrated in Tarxien and the dedicated parish church draws many visitors. St. Bartholomew and St. Mary are other notable chapels in Tarxien.

Tarxien is well connected by bus from the capital city Valletta, the best guide is to have in mind which sites you want to see then work out how to get there.

Places of Entertainment:
Many restaurants and shops in the main street spur a lively evening in Tarxien. One must not miss to taste the gorgonzola ravioli here.
