Yerevan – The Cultural, Administrative and Industrial Hub of Armenia

Yerevan is the cultural, political, economical, and scientific center of Armenia. Located on the Hrazdan River, the city has many theatres, monuments and museums that ensure that your visit to Yerevan is filled with fun and entertainment.

History of Yerevan:
Yerevan, also known as Erebuni, is the largest Armenian city and the capital of Armenia since 1918. The history of Yerevan dates back to the 8th century when the Erebuni Fortress was built. It expanded in leaps and bounds in the 20th century and has undergone drastic transformation in the last 50 years.

Popular Places and Attractions:
Yerevan has a number of notable attractions to allure the tourists, the primary being The Armenian Genocide Memorial that is dedicated to the victims of the Great Genocide of Armenia of 1915. Another place worth a visit in Yerevan is Victory Park. Visited by tourists of all ages, this amusement park presents a spectacular view of the city. It is also known for the monument of Mother Armenia.

One would also cherish visiting Katoghike, the oldest and the smallest church of the city constructed in characteristic Armenian style. For a glimpse of a huge collection of books and scrolls on Armenian language, Matenadaran, a huge museum of Yerevan, is the right place.

A visit to Yerevan is incomplete without a visit to the Republic Square located in the heart of the city. Many architects have contributed in the construction of this square which began in 1926. Other tourist attractions in Yerevan include Erebuni Fortress, The National Art Gallery, Cafesijan Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum, Yerevan Zoo, etc.

Getting Around in Yerevan:
Trolleybuses are the primary mode of transportation in Yerevan that has been operating in the city since 1949.  A good guide is to keep some small notes and coins handy to pay for your journey. The Yerevan Metro serves the capital city as a rapid transit system.

Places of Entertainment:
Shopping at Yerevan is full of excitement and thrill. One can buy host of things from Yerevan. The Armenian Cognac deserves a special mention as it is one of the finest brandies of the world. Some renowned restaurants in the city are Old Erivian Tavern Restaurant, Marco Polo Restaurant, Old Tbilisi Restaurant and the Restaurant at Armenia Marriott Hotel. 

For a vibrant nightlife, one can visit the Republic Square which gets decked with various stalls at night. The Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, where a concert is held daily, is another good option to spend some quality time. Other places that have earned a name in providing unlimited entertainment to tourists are Atlantic Discotheque, Gianni Club, New Cheers Bar, etc.

Accommodation Options:
Hotels and rental apartments are the two primary accommodation options at Yerevan. Another option that is gaining popularity among the budget travelers is host family option whereby the locals host the tourists at affordable prices, these are commonly know as guesthouses, also you can choose bed & breakfast, motels, youth hostels and budget hotels.

Currency and Language:
The manat (AZN) is the official currency of the country and comes in both – banknotes and coins, check the news and internet for the latest exchange rates. Azeri or Azerbaijani, a Turkic language, became the official language of the country in 1978.
