History
Before becoming the capital of Papua New Guinea, this region was inhabited by the Motu-Koitabu people for many centuries. The Europeans first explored this city in 1873 and the city was named in honor of the father of Captain John Moresby, the first European who landed here.

The downtown Moresby still retains the old meandering streets and quaint squares that subtly rub shoulders with the new façade of the city on the move.
