About WROCLAW

Wroclaw – The Vivacious South-Western City of Poland

Wroclaw, the lower Silesian city, is located on River Oder. It has been a part of Poland, Austria, Bohemia, Germany and Prussia in past times. On account of its location near the River Oder, Wroclaw comprises of more than two hundred bridges and 12 islands and is also called as “Poland’s Venice”. These factors are the major reasons behind Wroclaw being considered one of Poland’s most popular tourist destinations.

History
Wroclaw’s history goes back to the 10th century when it was called as Vratislavia and was limited to the Cathedral Island. It suffered major blows from the Mongols in 1241. The rebuilding was accompanied by growing German settlements and increasing influence of church. During this time, Wroclaw was called as Breslau. Napoleon invaded it in the year 1806 and following which it was controlled by the Prussians once Napoleon withdrew in 1811. It suffered more than 68% destruction during World War II. It was handed back to Poland as per the 1945 Potsdam treaty.

Popular Places and Attractions
Wroclaw is home to a number of rivers, bridges, canals and monuments such as Town Hall and Market Place. The construction of Town Hall was done in the twelfth century and it has now being converted into Wroclaw’s Historical Museum. The Market Place is very popular amongst visitors for its shows and functions.

The Japanese garden located in the Szczytnicki Park is also a popular attraction. It was established in early 10th century and is differentiated by its peculiar Japanese style of construction.

Some other popular places include the University of Wroclaw which is considered to be one of Europe’s most valuable monuments, the Hala Stulecia or “Centennial Hall” which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, St. Elisabeth’s church, Wroclaw palace, Grunwald Square, Leopoldin’s Hall, the Cathedral island and Raclawice Panorama where many special effects and devices are employed for recreating the Battle of Raclawice.

Getting Around
Most of the Old Town’s major monuments are located near to each other. Hence, a walking tour is preferable for them. For farther distances, public transport such as buses, trams and taxis would be more convenient. The best guide is to have some small notes handy for paying your fares. One can also hire private cars and bikes in Wroclaw.

Places for Entertainment
Wroclaw offers a wide range of entertainment especially through its night clubs, discos and pubs around the Market Place, musical events and restaurants. The Organ Summer, Summer Opera and Wieczory Tumskie are popular musical events.

Accommodation
Wroclaw is a popular business and cultural centre of Poland. Hence, it has a thriving hotel industry, ranging from Luxury to budget hotels, that tourists can benefit from. Other option would be to opt for youth hostels, motels, bed & breakfast, guesthouse as well as luxury apartments.

Currency
Zloty is the official Polish currency. Hence, if you were to visit Wroclaw you would have to convert all your currencies, including the Euros, and traveller’s cheques into the Zloty. Check the internet and news for the latest exchange rates.
