About CUSCO

Charming Cusco in Peru Offering a Slice of History

Cusco is a naturally beautiful Inca city which combines the best of its homegrown styles and that of the West. Though people usually come up here to go on to Machu Picchu, cisco too has a lot to offer tourists. No wonder they end up being mesmerised by its charm.

History
This Inca city was founded in the 11th century. The first Inca ruler Manco Capac ruled Cusco for 40 years. But the city saw some development only in the 15th century under the rule of Inca Pachacutec, who extended the boundaries of his empire as far as Argentina and Chile in the south and Columbia and Ecuador in the north. However, this golden period came to an end when the Spanish conquerors, under Francisco Pizarro, annexed Cusco in 1534 and made it part of the kingdom of King Charles V. With this invasion, the floodgates of multiculturalism opened and made its mark on each facet of Peruvian life. Pachacutec’s winter home, better known as Machu Picchu, is the closest Inca site that tourists visit even today.

Popular Places
The Plaza de Armas houses the churches of the Society of Jesus and the cathedral and is very highly visited. Among temples, the Koricancha (Sun Temple), is highly worshipped and is home to over 4,000 priests and attendants. Other tourist attractions are Ajlla Wasi, the very picturesque Saint Blas District, replete with the works of artists, and the Church of Santo Domingo, Museum of Religious Art and Museo Palacio Municipal. There is also a handicrafts gallery at the Museo Hilario Mendívil. People love going to folk dances at the Centro Qosqo de Arte Nativo on Avenida El Sol, which has been running everyday for the past 25 years.

Getting Around
Cusco is a very safe city with all means of public transportation like buses, minibuses, taxis and trains available. To go up to Machu Picchu, it’s best to go by train and then by bus to the citadel.

Places of Entertainment
At night, the bars and discos light up the city. Most of them are near the Plaza de Armas. People often go clubbing too and some of the better clubs here are Mama Africa, Kamikase, Mythology, El Garabatos and Ukukus.

Here, the adventurous indulge in sports such as parachuting, trekking, mountain biking, rafting, delta flying and 4x4 motor cross.

Food
Food in Cusco is no problem at all as it has all kinds of cuisines for even the fussiest palate. Most of the restaurants are located at Plaza de Armas. Typical Cuscan food includes picanterías and chicherías, which you must dig into. If you’re visiting Cusco in the winter, try Quso Kapiche, a stew of boiled lima beans and potatoes and seasoning. In February, they make a traditional soup of beef, bacon, lamb and pork with vegetables and rice—absolutely divine!

Cusco has all the means of entertainment, by day or night. It’s a great shopping area as you can pick up all kinds of handicrafts—caps, quilts, shawls, blankets, ponchos, sweaters, etc. It’s best to buy these in the Centro Artesaenal in Cusco, the Sacred Valley or in Pisaq’s craft market.

Cusco is also known for its unique pottery, jewellery, etc. You can check out the following stores: El Molino for imitation and imported goods, San Pedro for local produce, Mercado Mollina for just about everything and Pisac for food, ceramics and jewelry.

Accommodation Options
Cusco doesn’t just cater to the rich tourist but to budget tourists too. So, it’s easy to find youth hostels, bed and breakfasts, guest houses and budget hotels here. Luxury hotels are also available here. As you climb to higher altitudes, it’s common for hotels to have oxygen tanks in case you’re gasping for air.

Currency
The Nuevos Sole is the currency here. For the latest news about currency here, refer to the newspaper or go online.
